Candidates

We recruit a wide range of candidates from overseas for both NHS and private clients. If you’d like to work as a doctor in the UK, we’d like to help you.

Our service is free for candidates as we are paid by our clients to find suitable doctors for them.

The majority of posts we have are open to doctors who’ve not yet worked in the UK as well as doctors who are already in the UK.  As you might imagine though, it is easier to get a new job if you’re already working here and have a reference from a UK hospital.

Do not despair though. There are opportunities for doctors coming to the UK for the first time. In these circumstances, it is easier to get a post if you are willing to consider a range of different locations around the UK. It helps too, to have fluent English, a detailed CV and good general clinical experience in your specialty!

General Requirements

To apply for a post in the UK, you will need to have at least two years’ experience post-qualification (but see the requirements for specific posts), a detailed CV,  full registration with the UK’s medical authorities – the GMC – and fluent English.

CV preparation

UK hospitals like to see detailed CVs from candidates. Your CV should include all of your work history from the date you received your medical diploma to your current post. In addition, it should have a full description of the clinical work you’ve undertaken in the last two years. This information should include:

  • A brief description of the hospital facility you work in (location, size in terms of number of beds, whether acute or elective surgery or rehab, whether major hospital or district, specialties covered)
  • Size of the department you work in, sub-specialties within the department
  • Types of patients you treat and their main symptoms
  • Typical example of the numbers of patients you see each day and whether this is in an out-patient or in-patient ward
  • Types of treatment / surgery / procedures you are familiar with and the approximate numbers of each in the recent past (last 12 months)
  • The responsibility level (e.g. what types and numbers of procedures you have dealt with unsupervised, who you report to or refer complex cases to, whether you supervise or teach more junior doctors)
  • Any specialist areas of work or special interests

We have a standard CV form which we would be pleased to send to you, together with more detailed notes on how to complete it.

GMC registration

We can advise on all aspects of GMC registration. Please contact us if you have a specific query. In the meantime, here are some general notes to help.

  • All doctors must have GMC registration to work in the UK
  • Full registration is the minimum requirement. If you are applying for a Specialty Doctor post, it will help if you have specialist registration as well. All consultant level posts also require you to have specialist registration as well. (There are occasional exceptions to this, which, if applicable to a particular post, are detailed in the vacancy description)
  • Client hospitals now usually insist that all prospective candidates have their GMC registration  completed before they will consider you for an interview
  • Different rules apply on registration according to whether you are an EU national or from outside the EU. In simple terms, if you are an EU national, GMC registration is straightforward. If not, then it is much less straightforward and may take quite a long time to complete. We can give you specific advice on this if you let us know your nationality and where you obtained your primary medical diploma
  • The GMC website www.gmc-uk.org has a lot of useful information on registration as well as a specific section for new registrants: http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/registration_applications/join_the_register.asp

English Language

You will need very good English language skills. The NHS doesn’t usually insist on a formal language test but private health care companies sometimes do. As a guide, the standard of English you’ll need is equivalent to 6.5 to 7.0 on the Academic IELTS scale.

If you are unsure whether your medical skills are in demand in the UK, how good your English is or whether your CV is satisfactory, please contact us for advice. All our services to candidates are free.

Work permits and Visas

Candidates from outside the EU will need to have a work permit to work in the UK. The regulations on these have recently changed. A Tier 1 permit, which you apply for yourself, is similar to the old HSMP and a Tier 2 permit, which your prospective employer applies for on your behalf,  is similar to the old Work Permit.  We can give you more information on this if you need it.

Bulgarian and Romanian nationals are subject to special rules on working in the UK. In brief, you can come to the UK and be self-employed without a work permit (usuallly only consultant level doctors are allowed to work as self-employed). However, if you are going to take up employed work, you either need a Tier 1 visa or your employer needs to apply for a work permit for you.

Nationals from the countries that joined the EU in 2004 do not require work permits or visas. However, once you come to the UK to work, you are obliged to register with the EU worker registration scheme.
