You will be working both within the community and/or in-patient environments.  You will work within a variety of settings: palliative care; geriatrics; obstetrics etc.

Here is some more information on working as a GP in New Brunswick:

St John, New Brusnwick

History & Background

Originally, this part of Canada was home to three native tribes, the Mi’kmaq, the Wolastoqiyik and the Passamaquoddy The first European settlers were French, with the region being called the colony of Acadia.

From 1713, this part of what would become Canada, was surrendered to the British. After the American War of  Independence, New Brunswick became the  home for many loyalists who had fled the United States.

New Brunswick is one of the original 4 provinces of Canada, which formed the original Canadian Confederation in 1867.

Today, the population is split 65% English speaking, 32% French and a smattering of other nationalities, including some Mi’kmaq Industry wise,  forestry and closely allied industries (paper, wooden ships) have always played a major part in the economy – plus, of course, fishing. Today these are joined by mining (there are substantial deposits of potash, oil and gas), healthcare, education, finance and insurance. The total population is about 750,000 across the province.

The biggest towns are St John with around 130,000 (in the greater St John area) and Moncton  with 138,000.

St John is about 430 miles from Quebec and 170 miles from Bangor, Maine, USA

The local International airport is Moncton, which is about 80 miles to the north east. Halifax, in neighbouring  Nova Scotia has direct flights to London (- it’s only about 6 hrs flying time)

Healthcare in Canada

Canada has an extensive free at point of use healthcare service. For Canadian residents with a Medicare card, most services at a GP clinic are provided free of charge, like in the UK.  However, the practices are run differently. For a start, they are often smaller with one or two GPs and they are paid via a “fee for service” system – ie x number of dollars for a patient consultation, y dollars for a flu jab etc.

Registration process to become a GP in Canada

Medical practice registration is regulated by each Province or Territory. However, they take a lead from the College of Family Physicians  of Canada. If the CFPA will grant you CCFP (Certificant of the College of Family Physicians), then a full licence to practice in New Brusnwick should be forthcoming. The CFPA has recently begun to recognize training in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the USA. In general, if you have UK or Irish training, a CCT or JCPTGP (UK) or ICGP accredited course (Ireland) in family medicine and you are MRCGP (UK) or MICGP (Ireland), then the CFPA will recognize this as equivalent. This link will give you more information http://www.cfpc.ca/RecognizedTraining/

Remuneration

There are two ways to be paid for working as a GP in New Brunswick. If the job is in a remote area, then you’re likely to receive a salary, starting at between $160,000 to $170,000 (depending on your registration status). However, for the majority of GP jobs , you’ll be paid on a “fee per service” basis. Incomes vary but are in excess of $220,000 per annum

Tax

There are two taxes in Canada – a Federal tax and a provincial tax These are the current tax rates:

Federal tax: 15% on the first $42,707

22% on the next $42,707

26% on the next $46,992

29% on income over $132,406

New Brunswick provincial tax:

9.1% on the first $38,190

12.1% on the next $38,190

12.4% on the next $47,798

14.3% on the amount over $124,178

Typical overall tax rate on $200,000 of taxable income is 36% – less than in the UK (39%). Doctors who are self-employed can put various expenses against their gross income to reduce taxable income.
