SHOs in Trauma and Orthopaedics required for 6 to 12 month appointments.
We have several clients across England looking for SHO level Trauma and Orthopaedics doctors. Each hospital is willing to consider candidates new to the UK. So, if you haven’t worked in the UK before, this is a great opportunity to begin a clinical career in the NHS.
The Trust SHO duties typically run over a 6 week timetable including assisting in Theatre, Ward Duties 8.30 am to 5 pm with the day-to-day management and care of patients with traumatic and orthopaedic conditions and pre-assessment clinic, on call duties from 9am to 9.30 pm, a week of night duty and a week off post night. (this is not annual leave). Annual leave is timetabled in.
Other duties include pre-operative clerking and assessment, liaison with anaesthetists, assisting at operations and post-operative care and management until discharge. The Trust Senior House Officer will be expected to assist when necessary.
Trauma care plans for admitted patients are decided at early morning ward rounds while Accident and Emergency referrals are seen within 48 hours at 3 New Fracture Clinics per week.
The on call rota includes fixed annual leave and prospective cover for study leave. Currently the FY2’s and the ST1’s cover general surgery after midnight when they are on call. There is always a general surgical registrar available and the orthopaedic junior provides basic general surgical cover only. Arrangements regarding hospital at night are still under discussion.
The Senior House Officer is not expected to work in the Accident & Emergency Department, but will commonly be called there by the staff working in the department in order to manipulate simple fractures or admit trauma cases.
